Why Do You Work?

Why Do You Work? Before you trivialize this question, think with me for a moment. We all work various jobs for various reasons.  For some of us, we work because we need the money or the money is good, we love to problem solve, love the challenge, like the boss, enjoy the perks, we like the community… the list is endless.

Whatever your reasons are, I salute you because well you at least know why you do what you do. One of my late heroes remarked that a job is what we do to earn a living, but work is what we were born to do.  Regardless of what you do, having an understanding and clarity of why you do what you do is a great start because it horns your focus on what you know you must do, whether be it… ‘you live to work or work to live.’

I have met a number of people who love what they do, and they cannot imagine doing anything else with their lives. I find that these are the most joyful people to hang around with, and often are very resourceful. Could be it’s because they wish all humans were planted and firmly grounded in their true domain, you know, the kind of work that reveals your true essence: potential, power and presence like fish in water? Anyways, as I listen to these individuals, I realize they have unlocked the mystery some are yet to unlock—the joy of living a meaningful life that fulfills and keeps on giving time and time again.

When I think of such people, Mother Teresa comes to mind. This humble and compassionate lady not only loved to serve others, but found a sense of purpose and meaning in her life and gave her all into it. In return, many lives were transformed, and most of all she molded before us a framework to living a fulfilled life while empowering others to live as well. I dare say, she challenged the living to ‘work to live and not to live to work.’

So, as you advance in days, weeks and months into the new year, I wish you’ll find and resolve to do only the work that brings you joy while creating the same for others around you because that is the path to ‘work to live and not live to work.’ Therefore, whatever work you find to do or choose to do in 2016, remember that, “it is not how much you do, but how much love you put into the doing that matters.” Mother Teresa.
